Plane trees are trees of the genus Platanus, of the Platanaceae family, which are native to Eurasia and North America. They are typical of subtropical and temperate climates. In general, they are trees of ornamental interest, reaching between 40 and 50 meters in height.
They are common in temperate and subtropical forests. They have lobed leaves similar to those of the maple, which turn reddish in autumn before falling in winter, differing, however, from maples by the flowers gathered in globose inflorescences, in contrast to the catkins present in maples, and also by the absence of resin in the plane trees, among other minor structural differences.
The hybrid London plane (Platanus × acerifolia) has proved particularly tolerant of urban conditions, and has been widely planted in London and elsewhere in the United Kingdom and Europe.
